Honor: Obedience Is Better Than Sacrifice

According to Dictionary.com honor means to, “regard with great respect,” or to, “fulfill (an obligation) or keep (an agreement).”

I know it may seem a little traditional or plain to start off with a definition, but I felt it was best that I defined what I was referring to before going into what I have learned and am currently learning about it.

Now, I am going to be very honest. This was an area that I was very weak in in the past and though I have grown better, I do still feel this is a thorn in my side.

It is one of those areas that must be swiftly cast down, and if it is not it can cause many problems.

Of course, I can no longer say that I do not know where it stems from because it is rooted in rebellion. For over half of my life I have struggles with an attitude of, “But my point is” or “I get that but.” Please, I used the term “but” so much you would have thought it was my middle name.

Thankfully, I was able to grow, however there are some situations where this negativity likes to feed off of, and they are when I feel the person in authority is wrong & when I feel that I am being treated unfairly.

Let's say for instance I am at work and I feel my boss is treating me unfairly or taking their frustration out on me. I have to begin casting down my attitude and telling myself to still show them respect in spite of the fact that I am feeling attacked.

Now, I know some of you are probably saying, “Tell them about themselves!” & “They better not come at me sideways”, but think about this. If you express yourself incorrectly what good would it actually do. Even if they are treating you unfairly, your disrespecting them will most likely land you suspended, on probation, or fired, and they will probably still be treating others the same.

This is where you have to look at things wisely and see a) If there is an actually problem. & b) How you should handle it if there is. Also, seek God, see what thus saith the Lord, & follow His examples.

If you look in Luke Jesus showed various honor to numerous people, even showing it to those who were involved in taking His life. He healed one of the soldiers who captured Him to take Him to the cross (See Luke 22:49-51) Even though they were working against Him He showed respect and love because it wasn't about what they were doing. It was about who He served.

This is why we must command our souls to show the God we serve regardless of how others treat us and what others do because our commitment to God is much more important than the actions of others.

Being followers of Christ can't just be about clapping our hands or stomping our feet. It must be about our lifestyles as well. As 1 Samuel 25:22 states, “...to obey is better than sacrifice.”

So, the next time you're in a situation like this remember that showing others honor is in God’s will and that God will reward you for your obedience. (See Isaiah 1:19, NKJV) You simply must decide if your sacrifice will be for appearance or authentic. Hopefully we all choose the latter.

  1. It's important to maintain respect no matter the situation. It's fun to say or consider "telling someone about themselves" but unless you are in control of the situation, it generally doesn't come out well for you! Good post!
